Description of Middle School Materials
Learning is enhanced when there is a clear understanding of the learning goals. There are two types of objectives: language functions, and language processes.
Language Functions The language functions specify what the students are expected to be able to do. The following lists outline the language functions that course supports.
1. Oral Language - Listening and Speaking (Functions: Interpersonal, Poetic, Transactional) Students are expected to be able to: Listen and respond to texts and relate them to personal experience Listen and respond to texts and recall the main ideas Converse and talk about meaning in text Use texts to retell a story Use texts to recall information
2. Written Language - Reading and Writing
Reading (Functions: Personal Reading, Close Reading) Students are expected to be able to: Respond to language and meaning in different texts, relating them to personal experience Use semantic, syntactic, visual, and graphophonic cues to gain meaning
Writing (Functions: Expressive, Poetic, Transactional) Students are expected to be able to: Write to record personal experiences and observations Write in a variety of genre Write in authentic contexts
3. Visual Language - Presenting and Viewing (Functions: Presenting and Viewing) Students are expected to be able to: Respond to meanings and ideas in the visual components of a text Respond to meanings and ideas, identifying and describing the verbal and visual features Present their ideas and understanding of texts using simple layouts, designs, and drama
Language Processes Language processes are crucial for language development. The processes are: thinking critically, exploring language, and processing information. These processes encompass the three language strands. The course supports the following achievement objectives in the language processes.
Students are expected to be able to: Identify and express meaning from questions related to the texts, drawing from personal experience Identify some common conventions of writing Identify, retrieve, record, and present information from the texts Understand that communication involves verbal and visual features View and use visual texts to gain and process information
